Kilchoman Single Cask Release. Private Cask Bottling for Whisky in Leiden 2014. Distilled 13.6.2007, bottled 21.2.2014. Bourbon Cask. Cask Number 142 / 2007, 245 bottles. 60,4%

I’ve tasted a number of Kilchoman expressions in my past, most of them having been pretty good stuff, however this one is the very first Kilchoman in this blog of mine. Let’s see how this single cask bottling from the Islay farm distillery turns out to be.

Color: Pale gold.

Nose: A blast of smoke, canned fruits mixed with various herbs (mainly thyme). As this is quite strong stuff, plenty of water is needed, fortunately it handles water well. As neat it’s very closed, a bit like the closed fist of Rocky Balboa.  With water: Ha ha – heavily peated Glenfiddich – in other words, a bowl of pear ice cream in front of an autumn bonfire. After a good half an hour, aniseed and salmiak.

Palate: Obviously a youngster from Islay, a very smoky opening, an ashtray after the rain – luckily I’ve never tasted such a delight - it sounds bad but in this context it makes sense, as you know. Unripe / bitter yellow fruits with a couple of bites of Finnish liquorice.  A little closed to start with, because of the high ABV. With water: Smoked grape juice moving towards smashed cooked potatoes with a knob of fresh butter. After a while – some chalkiness.

Finish: Medium length with Turkish peppers (salty liquorice candy) and liquorice.

In musical terms this is like Bon Scott’s era AC/DC, a little harsh with plenty of balls and attitude.

Kilchoman Single Cask Release. Embotellamiento privado para Whisky in Leiden 2014. Destilado 13.6.2007, embotellado 21.2.2014. Barril de bourbon. Barril no. 142 / 2007, 245 botellas. 60,4%
